Day 15: Your Dream House…

In eighth grade I had to take a tech class that included a unit on housing floor plans. We had to design our own one level house plan. I was hooked. I got a stash of graph paper and started designing my own floor plans to go with all my stories, dreaming up houses all the time. I got the bug in my brain that maybe I’d want to be an architect. In high school, I had the opportunity to sit in on a speaker—a licensed architect—and hear him talk about architecture and what it took to become an architect. His words (paraphrased), “You wanna be an architect? Good luck. You go ahead and go through all that schooling for seven years and you have a less than 10% chance of becoming a licensed architect when all is said and done. You’re more than likely going to be stuck working on someone else’s plans for the rest of your life and you’ll never get to sign your name to any plan. But you can go ahead and waste your money while trying.” Way to sell your profession pal. Way to motivate the young masses. I’ll be an accountant and write on the side I guess. (I didn’t do any of that but that’s neither here nor there.)

I may not have pursued a career in architecture, but I still love designing house plans. Which is probably why I can’t decide what my dream house would look like. I’m always coming up with new ideas and forever morphing and tweaking what a given house might look like. I want a big kitchen with lots of cupboard and counter space. And a fancy staircase. I could spend forever getting the staircase just right. I’d also need a home theater comfortable for watching movies and canoodling with my husband and playing video games for hours on end. And a cushy office for all of the many hours spent in front of the computer.

It’s a good thing I have a little computer program that lets me waste hours playing around with these options.

Something to say?
