A Year in Review…2021…the Music…

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect the results to look like when I generated the charts for 2021. I did spend most of my listening hours with the same songs/albums/artists on repeat, but I also spent a lot of time listening and watching outside of iTunes and Last.fm. The month of December was spent mostly playing Final Fantasy XIV and not listening to much music. (A good chunk of the time I do both at the same time.) But I also have the habit of starting a playlist and getting sidetracked by other media, but instead of stopping the playlist, I just mute it until I’m ready to come back to it. I track things that I’m not actually listening to because I’m listening to things I don’t track.

Makes sense.

Anyroad…

In 2021 I listened to a grand total of

… 32,847 plays of

… 2,047 tracks from

… 332 albums by

… 106 artists.

Despite my murky listening habits, this year was the highest play count recorded in my Last.fm stats since I created my account way back in 2005. I honestly expected the numbers to be lower than previous years, but hey. Whatever. Some numbers are higher than I might have thought. Some are lower. But the WHO doesn’t really surprise me at all. One might think with 30-some-thousand plays there would be more than 106 different artists in that tally, but one would think wrong.

This is me after all.

The first song of the year played was Mr. Brightside by The Killers.

The last song of the year played was Here I Am, There You Go by Splender.

Top 10 Most Played Artists…

1.) The Killers 3,633 plays

2.) I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME 3,467 plays

3.) Brandon Flowers 3,52 plays

4.) The Young Veins 2,672 plays

5.) Sara Bareilles 2,388 plays

6.) Darren Criss 2,030 plays

7.) Nine Days 1,609 plays

8.) Splender 1,531 plays

9.) Billy Joel 1,439 plays

10.) Matt Nathanson 1,159 plays

Honorable mention: Tonic, O.A.R., Ingram Hill, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Gavin DeGraw, The Fray, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Monkees, Parachute, Emerson Hart, Stage, 2AM Club, Patrick Stump, Better Than Ezra

I don’t think there were any real surprises in there. Though I think I expected higher numbers from some of the honorable mentions. I did spend a lot of time falling down Youtube rabbit holes, so that might be where those discrepancies came from.

Top 10 Most Played Albums…

3.) Flamingo – Brandon Flowers 1,684 plays

4.) The Desired Effect – Brandon Flowers 1,331 plays

10.) The Blessed Unrest – Sara Bareilles 575 plays

Honorable mention: more from Sara Bareilles and I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, Billy Joel, The Killers, Nine Days, Darren Criss, Matt Nathanson, Tonic, O.A.R., The Fray, Stage, Panic! At the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Ingram Hill, Patrick Stump, Emerson Hart, Gavin DeGraw

These results were more surprising as I would have expected The Killers to dominate the list of albums, but I guess it makes sense since I’m more apt to listen to a mixtape playlist of their songs rather than the complete albums in one sitting. I don’t think I expected the top two to be that high on the list. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by any of it because I have zero concept of the passage of time, and therefore don’t have accurate memory of WHEN I listened to things, whether it be last week, last month, or last year.

Top 10 Most Played Songs…

1.) RAZZMATAZZ (the album) I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME 174 plays
(the entire album was played in full 174 times)

2.) Take a Vacation! (the album) The Young Veins 167 plays
(the entire album was played in full 167 times, thus creating an obvious pattern of repetition)

4.) Can’t Deny My Love Brandon Flowers 158 plays

5.) Crossfire Brandon Flowers 158 plays

6.) I Can Change Brandon Flowers 158 plays

7.) Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts Brandon Flowers 158 plays

8.) Only the Young Brandon Flowers 158 plays

9.) Still Want You Brandon Flowers 158 plays

10.) Poetry by Dead Men Sara Bareilles 127 plays

Honorable mention: more from Brandon Flowers, Sara Bareilles, and I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, Darren Criss, The Killers, Tonic, Splender, Mr. Mister, Fall Out Boy, The Monkees, Stage, Matt Nathanson, Nine Days, Billy Joel, Elton John, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Panic! At the Disco, The Fray

My habit of listening to albums in their entirety is never more obvious than looking at the top played songs. I have to go deep into the list to find variety for the honorable mentions. The one-off songs that don’t line up with the rest of the album they come from are more than likely associated with whatever story I’m currently beating my head against the wall over. (Which is why the top songs in my all-time list are almost all on the Ben & Marina playlist. I anticipate tracks from the Ryan & Hallie list to start providing strong competition sooner than later.)

Ryan refuses to give up his headphone nest and demands more songs from his namesake’s playlist.

Those are MY headphones, RYAN.
