Mashed…

Mmmm…mashed potatoes…

No. Wait. That wasn’t what that was supposed to be a reference to.

Sidetracked.

Anyway.

It’s no secret that my latest fixation has been Red vs Blue and the crew at Rooster Teeth. (And not just Caboose Joel.) I could probably write an entire post flailing about that. But this is not that post.

On a number of occasions recently (or not so recently, my timing is impeccable these days), a handful of the RT crew brought up a new album they were listening to by someone I’d never heard of, I decided to check it out. My senses may be dulled as of late, but I am still constantly seeking out new music.

The artist is Girl Talk (which is actually just one guy) and the album is All Day (which is available as a free download). As far as I can tell, he is pretty much a DJ who is King Of The Mash-Ups, apparently. The entire album is one continuous mishmash of songs spanning several decades of music. I keep swinging between “hey, this is kind of fun” to “what the shit is this?” I’d say about 90% of the songs included are songs I would NEVER listen to by choice on their own. There’s a lot of rap and hip-hop in there. I don’t “DO” rap and hip-hop. I just don’t care for it. But somehow mixed with a bunch of other stuff, it kind of works. It’s like listening to awesomely bad pop music. It’s kind of a train wreck. But it’s kind of fun.

The download website provides a list of all the artists sampled and as I read through it, I have never heard of most of that music. I might recognize the artist name, but I couldn’t identify the song because I normally wouldn’t touch their music with a ten-foot pole. And I still wouldn’t in most cases. But somehow, in this hodgepodge, it works.

Something to say?
