Home Sweet Home…

It’s been a week now since we had the Great Key Fiasco and Mystery.

The water was turned on—on time as we were expecting last Friday morning. But the electricity didn’t get turned on until later. Thank god for the water guy. We mentioned we still didn’t have power and he called the electric guy and asked him, “WTF?” and we found out that it was supposedly already on.

It wasn’t.

So we would have been waiting all freaking day for the power to get turned on and nothing would have happened unless we actually called.

After the utilities were sorted, we spent the rest of the day CLEANING the house. I couldn’t move by the end of the night. I am so not cut out for this work business. We also had the carpet cleaned. And topped off the night by going to bed at 9PM and I slept until 9AM the next morning. Dear Dog I was freaking SPENT.

Saturday we transported our food and a few other things to the house, bought a few necessities and spent the rest of the day taking care of last minute stuff at home before Sunday.

Sunday was MOVING DAY.

We were up bright and early and done moving by noon.

Have I ever mentioned that having a professional mover for a father-in-law is kind of the best thing ever? Of course it helped that we have almost no furniture, but the man knows what he’s doing when it comes to moving crap in and out of a house.

Monday Bob and I went shopping and spent a whole lot of money on stuff we needed for the house. Oh ye gods the money. But it’s stuff we’re going to have for…ever…give or take. So it’s not like we’re just throwing money away here.

Tuesday Bob went back to work…BOO! HISS!…And I scrubbed floors. URGH those floors needed scrubbing. I took a layer of grime off when I cleaned on Friday but WTF did the last people do before they left? Have a freaking MUD PARTY? The floors were scary. I got down on my hands and knees with a bucket and a scrub brush and I’m pretty sure I could do it again and still get more grime off. But my white socks don’t turn instantly black walking across my kitchen anymore.

Wednesday…We finally got internet back! Oh—and we went grocery shopping. REAL grocery shopping. We bought bacon and eggs and flour and sugar and all kinds of things we’ve never bought before because WE HAVE OUR OWN KITCHEN TO PUT IT IN ZOMG!WTF!???ICANNOTEVENBELIEVEIT!!!!!11!!!1!

Thursday I went to see my parents and pick up some kitchen related items I had there. I’ll be taking more of my stuff that’s still there now that I’ll have the space to keep it. But probably not too much until we actually CLOSE on the house. And it will get me to actually VISIT them a little more often than I have been. Because I am a terrible, terrible daughter.

Today I am cleaning the oven. Right now. As I type. The self-clean function is a blessing after SCRUBBING EVERYTHING ELSE in the house. It’s stinking up the place quite nicely, but I have the windows open and it hasn’t set off the smoke detectors so it’s not kicking out that many fumes.

It’s been five days since we officially moved in.

I love my house.

It’s still a disaster. There are boxes scattered all over the place. We haven’t even planned a trip to go furniture shopping. And we still have no idea when we’re actually going to CLOSE on the place.

But dammit, I freaking LOVE my house.

The kitchen is in fairly decent shape, all things considered. And our loft/office is somewhat assembled. Hello? Computers and internet!? Our bedroom looks the best—because it’s just a bed, nightstands, and dresser.

Once we get things cleaned up and put away, I’ll have to take pictures and show them off. Because I can.

This is the outside of our house. Isn’t it just the cutest little thing you ever did see?

Last night I cooked (I just typed cookied…I think that’s a sign I need to start baking things in my oven…once it’s done self-cleaning) my first “New” meal in my kitchen. I tried my hand at Huevos Rancheros. They turned out pretty well I think, for winging it.

My version (this time at least) was as such:

I fried up corn tortillas in a little bit of oil to crisp them up on each side and drained them on paper towels. (Next time I’ll probably use cooking spray to cut out some fat & all that.)

Then I spread (heated) refried beans and black beans on the shells. Added a fried (sunny side up) egg, shredded pepper jack cheese, and a glob of guacamole.

We had salsa that I forgot to add and most recipes call for sour cream on top, but we didn’t have any on hand. It’s a pretty flexible dish you can modify to fit your tastes however you like. We’ll probably change it up next time we make it. I’m definitely going to have to try adding bacon sometime.

Something to say?
